The wayward, wilful spirit of indie-rock icon Jason Molina (1973–2013) is conjured on screen via the insights of Ohio insiders who illuminate the truth about his coming of age in – and later escape from – a Lake Erie steel town, and his project Songs: Ohia, the hugely influential indie/lo-fi/alt-country band featuring a shifting cast of collaborators. The film’s participants reflect on the contradictions of Jason’s boundless talent – as well as his raunchy humour, propensity to lie, refusal to interpret lyrics, and heartbreakingly premature death at age 39.
