Before Coachella, even before Woodstock, there was Newport. From 1963 to 1966, the Newport Folk Festival on Rhode Island on America’s East Coast became a crucible for protest, cultural change and musical revolution, as iconic performers including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and the Freedom Singers helped a generation find its voice. Drawing entirely on rare and previously unseen archival footage, filmmakers Robert Gordon and Joe Lauro look beyond the stars to celebrate America’s extraordinary musical diversity, from gospel and Delta blues to traditional folk, and the platform that Newport offered to artists working in those traditions. Newport & the Great Folk Dream captures a defining moment when music illuminated struggle, inspired courage and ignited controversy.
