WORLD PREMIERE + Q&A featuring Marietta Veulens and director Olivia Emes
2019, UK, 60 mins
Passions and Rituals is an immigrant story of Marietta Veulens, a composer who has spent 20 years trying to complete her lifeworks and album. Torn between her native Cuba and the UK, Veulens returns to her hometown of Matanzas to perform music live for the first time, and complete the journey to finding her true voice. Reinventing classical rhythms and musical form, she is rewriting Cuban tradition as she combines classical and popular music with contemporary, folkloric and jazz. The film chronicles her journey, the circle of women and goddesses who nourish and inspire her, and her ability to cross boundaries and borders through her music.
Doc’n Roll Film Festival is supported by the BFI using funds from the National Lottery to grow audience appetite and enjoyment for a wide range of independent British and international films.
